The check gauges warning is an additional warning to the driver that something is not right. are you sure it's check gauges light or could it be check engine soon? Reason I'm asking is because I just recently purchased 2001 firebird, and check gauges light came, it just needed gas. Then it came on again to change oil. So I changed oil and it went off.

Why would you want it to come on. Its not on because theres nothing wrong with your engine.
Check the bulbs in case they have fused, next check the fuse, and finally it could be the brake light switch which may need replacing
first check the fuses......maybe the cluster of gauges shorted out?....may need to replace it.

The only proper way is with a scan tool. Unhooking the battery might clear the code temporarily, but it will return if not fixed.
