The Lute was an instrument developed and used in the medieval, renaissance and baroque periods (roughly 1100-1750) in Europe. The word Lute comes from the word Oud which is Arabic for wood. The Oud is itself an instrument, and could be considered the predecessor of the Lute. It is associated with middle eastern music.

The Lute fell out of favor with the developement of the vihuela, and later the guitar. Within the past 40 or 50 years there has been a revival in early music, and the lute is again growing in populairty.

Yes the lute must have been created in china. Even though people say it was invented in Europe in around the Renaissance times it has earlier records in china

dating back to over 2000 years ago.

based on my research.

It depends what area of the lute you are talking about.

it is made almost entirely of wood.

The soundboard is a teardrop-shaped thin flat plate of resonant wood (usually spruce).

The back or the shell is assembled from thin strips of hardwood (maple, cherry, ebony, rosewood, gran, wood and/or other tonewoods) called ribs.

The neck is made of light wood, with a veneer of hardwood (usually ebony).

The bridge is usually made of a fruit wood.

The frets are made of loops of gut tied around the neck.

Strings were historically made of animal gut, usually from the small intestine of sheep (sometimes in combination with metal) and are still made of gut or a synthetic substitute, with metal windings on the lower-pitched strings.

I'm not too sure about the belly though but hope that's enough for you. :)
