The Altamont Speedway Free Festival was a rock concert held on Saturday, December 6, 1969, at the Altamont Speedway in northern California. It was organized and headlined by The Rolling Stones. The concert is chronicled in the documentary/performance film Gimme Shelter.
The event is best known for having been marred by considerable violence, including a homicide.
Regarding the homicide: accounts of the specifics differ: Wilkipedia has a thorough article about what appears to have happened. In summary, Meredith Hunter, an 18-year-old, brandished a revolver near the stage. He was then surrounded by members of the Hells Angels who stabbed -- and some say stomped -- him to death. The Hells Angels were acting in sort of a "quasi" security capacity at the concert: they had been invited to keep people off the stage and away from the generators, in exchange for free beer.
