Britney Spears was an influence on a generation. She turned the Pop World upside down with songs, like "Hit Me Baby One More Time," "Oops...I Did It Again," and "Toxic." Early on in her career, she was seen as this "Lolita," teasing teenaged boys and middle-aged men with her scantily clad outfits, her provocative dance moves, mixed with her apparent innocence.

Her impact on music, unfortunately, is that starting with her, it no longer became so much about the music, the vocal talent which were the trademarks of singers like Whitney and Mariah, and as it was about the image, the sex appeal. She seems to have sexualized music, just like Madonna and Janet Jackson did in their respective decades.

Her impact on society is much more complex. Her recent struggles (head-shaving, crotch-flashing, etc.) seem to warn people about the dangers and pitfalls of excessive fame and recognition. Her story definitely de-Romanticized the notions of fame, fortune, and stardom. She is also a testament to the depths to which the American media has fallen; everything she did, for a while, was front-page news. People were more curious about her latest antic than about relevant issues, like the War on Terror and Darfur.
