AnswerThe viol was an instrument used in the renaissance (1450 - 1600) and baroque (1600 - 1750) periods in Europe which commonly had six strings. It was available in three sizes which corresponded roughly to the sizes of the modern violin, viola and cello, although all three were usually held upright like the 'cello. The tunings of the six strings varied from place to place, although ther were often at intervals of a fourth like the modern double-bass. Composers like Bach, Vivaldi and Byrd wrote music for the viol. Although widely used during that time, the instruments fell from use as the cello became more popular. There is practically no music for the viol dating from later than about 1750 until the contemporary era, when several composers have begun writing for it again. There have even been attempts to produce electric viols.

A related instrument is the viol d'amore, which had six or seven playing strings and was held under the chin like a violin. However, this also had sympathetic strings, so the total number was actually more like twelve or fourteen.

AnswerThere were a number of bowed instruments with six strings, they include
  • Various medieval fiddles not otherwise given distinct names
  • Vihuela de arco, which sometimes had six strings
  • Viola da gamba, also called simply viol, a guitar sized instrument
  • Viola d'amore, which had six or seven melody strings and additional sympathetic strings
  • Lyra da gamba, another guitar sized instrument, but with a flatter bridge for bowing multiple strings
  • Lyra da braccio, violin sized with four melody strings and two plucked strings
  • Crwth, a Welsh instrument strung like a lyra da braccio, but with a very different body
