The basic rhythm section for a mainstream jazz group would be piano, bass and drums. Most commonly a Saxophone (either tenor or alto) would play lead (melody) with all members eventually improvising solos. A Trumpet is frequently added sometimes with an additional sax. These are the most common configurations from my experience.
