I am a Volkspeler so I can speak freely on the matter. The instrument most commonly used is the piano, but accordions, concertinas and guitars are frequently used when we perform publicly and in the open. See 'Volkspele' on YouTube for some video clips posted by myself when we visited the Castle of Good Hope in Cape Town, and hear the Accordion in the background. We also invite 'boeremusiek' orchestras to play when we have a gathering, although when one invites an orchestra your gathering would likely be grander, more celebratory, e.g. a birthday or festival. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boeremusiek Some of our songs are traditional, others especially composed.
