Field boots are simply just boots that are not dress boots and that you do not mind getting scratched or mucked up with dirt or anything. Where a dress boot is one that is worth more, is more easily scratched, and you wear in shows or fancy events.

What is the required footware for show jumping?

Tall boots with a 1/2 inch heel is the norm show jumping. There are different varieties but the 2 basics are the 'field boot' and 'dress boot'. Field boots have lacing at the instep for easier on and off. Field boots are perfectly fine for most showing. Dress boots are for bigger shows, hunter classes, dressage. They a like field boots but are smooth all the way up with no lacing on the instep.

This would depend on the show itself and the type of boot. Typically Dressage shows require black 'fittings' like boots and tack, however you should be able to call the show secretary and ask if the answer is not on the entry forms.

When can you wear longboots in horse eventing?

Footwear for the eventing rider are dress or field boots. The paddock combination half-chap should be reserved for hacking and training, not competing. For the horse, boots are permitted for the cross-country and stadium jumping, excluding the first day dressage test, especially at the higher levels. Boots for the 2 and 3 days include splint, bell, polo wraps, and of course shipping boots to and from the event.

How tight should riding boots be at the calf?

Depending on your environment, ankle length boots may be better. Long/Dressage or English style boots should be tight enough that they do not rub your calves, or the horse, at a sitting trot... but loose or of a flexible enough material to remove and put on without too much effort! Something else to consider is the height of the boot - as was said before, the ankle-length paddock boots are practical and, with half chaps, can be warmer than dress or field boots. Paddock boots and half chaps are generally used for schooling and lessons, but leather half chaps are acceptable in some schooling shows. If you choose field (hunter/jumper) or dress (dressage) boots, the height is as important as the width. The spanish-cut top which is currently in vogue is wonderful at making the leg appear longer without cutting off movement at the knee. Be careful in measuring your leg before ordering boots or, even better, go to a tack shop and try on various boots to find your best fit! or if you can fit 3 fingers down the back of the boot that always works for me
