German composer Richard Wagner's "Der Ring des Nibelungen", or "The Ring of the Nibelung" (also known as "The Ring Cycle", is a series of four epic music dramas. The operas are loosely based on episodes and characters from Norse mythology, and were composed from 1848 to 1874. The titles of the four individual operas are Das Rheingold (The Rhinegold), Die Walküre (The Valkyrie), Siegfried and Götterdämmerung (Twilight of the Gods). The Nibelung of the title refers to a dwarf named Alberich, and the Ring is the one he fashions from the Rhinegold. The title of the Ring Cycle actually means "Alberich's Ring".
