Ballads tell a story (narrative) which may have elements of heroism, extraordinary feats, humour, suffering or love lost.

These ballads may be in musical style, as in popular folk songs of a period, or in poetry. A typical example of Ballad in poetic form is AB 'Banjo' Paterson's The Man From Snowy River, which tells the story of a very ordinary bloke who manages a heroic act.
