A bass viol is a fretted bowed stringed musical instrument from the viola da gamba family. It is similar to, but smaller than, a cello.

Violas are typically between fifteen and eighteen inches. However, there are smaller violas for children who are learning the instrument. Which size a person chooses all depends on their preference and size. I am a 5'4" woman and prefer a 15 inch viola because it fits my frame. My male teacher, however, uses a 17 inch viola. It all depends on the person's frame.
