To bend a "note" on a guitar. The player first plays a note by holding a string at a certain fret, once or while the string is plucked, the string can be "bent" by moving it either up or down. Bending the string results in a higher tension, thus raising the pitch of the note.

Bending strings means literally pulling the strings down to make a note bend either a half or full note, or pushing them up at a particular fret to increase the note so it's sharp or a full note up.

On some Guitars, notably a Fender Strat, the guitar's Tremolo performs the same function. Instead of the player using the fingers to bend the strings by pushing or pulling them, the player uses a small lever which is attached to the guitar's Tremolo system; after playing a chord, the player can push the lever down to make the resulting chord sound take a dive in tone. Likewise, pulling up on the bar will shift the chord pitch higher.

The player also has the option of using the Tremolo for a "Wah" effect.

Bending a string when you play a guitar means when you fret the note, you physically move the string up (or down) across the fret. This is especially used in blues and jazz playing.

Push down on the string until you're touching the frets and then move your fingers up or down.
