A pad saver is a long, soft, brush-like "wick" or "mop" that is inserted into the Clarinet. The marketing idea behind this product is that the pad saver will wick-off moisture and prevent it from accumulating on and damaging the pads. Unfortunately, this doesn't always work as well as advertised and might even cause problems -- and bad odors too. This isn't from poor design but from poor maintenance on the part of the user, that is, using the pad saver only and not bothering to remove most of the moisture with a swab first.
It is usually enough to run a clean silk swab through the clarinet (and mouthpiece) right after using it. When arriving home open up the case and let the clarinet (and case) air out for a while. Of course, be careful of sudden temperature changes if it is a wood clarinet.
If you decide on using pad savers be sure to use them in conjunction with a good quality (preferably silk) swab first. And be sure to wash them (and the swab too) often, begin careful to let them dry completely before putting them back in service.
Clarinet pad savers are good. They are used in music classes a lot. If they were bad, music classes wouldn't use them!! :)
The theory is that the pad saver will absorb most the moisture left in the instrument, which will slow the deterioration of the pads caused by moisture. Some people feel that the pad saver actually traps the moisture in the instrument limiting it's affect on pads. Personally, I believe that they best serve the purpose when used to transport the instrument from, say rehearsal to home, where they are then removed, allowing both the sax and the pad saver to finish drying.
it could cost a lot of money but i know that if you are looking for a good clarinet the price would be at least $3,300... yes i know that is a lot of money but it is not that bad after you get used to it. for me well i am still young but i know my clarinets, for me to replace my clarinet it would be $1,100.
I recently purchased an Anaxa clarinet and it had improved my playing and mouth positioning. Laval is a cheap brand. My Laval clarinet broke within a week of playing and needed two hundred dollars worth of pad repairs
Piccolo clarinet From the smallest to the biggest, here it is: ~ Soprano clarinet ~ Basset clarinet ~ Basset horn ~ Alto clarinet ~ Bass clarinet ~ Contra-alto clarinet ~ Contrabass clarinet
the reason the b flat is airy is because of the tube in the hole where the register key pad rests but as for the g i do not know why
