All answers to this question will be in the form of opinion... Jaco Pastorious used a Fander Jazz Bass, and Bootsy Collins uses a custom Ed Roman bass with Fender Jazz Bass style pickups. So I'd say a Fender Jazz bass would at least be suitable for funk. But the funk is not in the bass, you understand... the groove is in the heart.
There were several bass players in the funk brothers. However, the two most prominent bassists were James Jamerson (arguably one of the greatest bass players of all-time) and Bob Babbit

Mark and Don were furious that the record was released without their consent or awareness of it. Someone made money off of Grand Funk's success. Mark says it was a guy from Michigan. He is a very good funk bassist vocalist; and, he is the original bass player of ConFunkShun. I saw ConFunkShun play as Project Soul before their fame as ConFunkShun; they were hot as a local band from Vallejo, CA. I followed the band around the San Francisco Bay area in the early 1970's as a 17 year old in the U.S. Navy.Lemuel A. Crump
