There are two meanings here. Theme is the subject matter, like Walking In the Rain is about love and a war-time separation angst. a Theme song would be a song specifically written- or adapted as the identity song for a movie or television show. at one time they were called signature songs, as being closely associated with one artist or group- for example Kate Smith and God Bless America, which is arguably the least martial or miitaristic of Yank patriotic songs, continuing course- Be My Baby is the signature tune of the Ronettes. The Beatles had so many hits no one song could stand out as typical! so there you have it, a song has a theme- subject matter or plot if you will , but a theme song is written ( or adapted) for a specific movie or television or radio program to set the theme.
