It will depend on the state you work in. Each state has established a minimum rate for tipped servers that is substancially LESS than the minimum wage. I believe in Illinois the minimum for a tipped server is about $3.10. As a server, most of our income comes from tips, which can be $50-$100 per shift (or even more on occasion.) Be aware that you ARE responsible for paying income tax on your tips. Ruth cris is a fairly expensive mid upper class restaurant so the average tip is 18%. i went there with my wife last week and spent 155.60 and left the server 35 dollars. Those servers make 600+ wk for a full time position no question. If you look around at Ruth cris you will notice all the servers are in there 40s and 50s. Alot of them are making a career of it. always depends on the price of the food and drinks.. if your a hustler you can do well as a server at a place like that.
