The plug or sensor above the oil filter on a 1996 Cherokee is the oil pressure sending unit. This sensor controls the oil pressure gauge.

the sensor is located right above the oil filter....careful they crack very easily...but are really easy to replace...part costs about 25 bucks. Do you have to drain the oil I wonder? You do not have todrain the oil to change out a pressure sensor. No. the unit is outside. you can unplug it and check your oil pressure gauge, it will be to the far right when it is unplug.
Standing in front of the jeep, it's at the very back of the engine, on top, next to the distributor, on the left. It should have a wire plug on top. you will need a special tool to remove the sensor, being careful not to break the wiring plug (remove the wiring plug first).
