∙ 12y agothe sensor is located right above the oil filter....careful they crack very easily...but are really easy to replace...part costs about 25 bucks. Do you have to drain the oil I wonder? You do not have todrain the oil to change out a pressure sensor. No. the unit is outside. you can unplug it and check your oil pressure gauge, it will be to the far right when it is unplug.

The plug or sensor above the oil filter on a 1996 Cherokee is the oil pressure sending unit. This sensor controls the oil pressure gauge.
Check sending unit or sending unit wiring for short to ground. Also could be a plugged oil line causing a spike in pressure. Try installing a mechanical gauge to get an accurate pressure reading.
It's a 30 dollar part. The unit should be located near the filter. Unplug/Unscrew the old one and insert new and plug in.
Perhaps worn engine bearings due to excessive mileage or lack of regular maintenance
If the oil sending unit is leaking oil by the inside of the component, then I don't know of any way to fix that other than removal and replace with another one. If it is leaking by the threads, then you can try teflon tape to seal that. Also make sure it is leaking from the sending unit and not leaking down from the valve cover.
The oil pressure sensor is on the top rear of the engine, next to the distributor.
The oil pressure sending unit on the 4.7L engine is right above the oil filter.
These vehicles only run a one-line fuel system meaning that the fuel pressure regulator is part of the fuel sender--fortunately on these vehicles they combine the fuel pressure regulator and fuel filter into one assembly--which is changeable, but the fuel tank has to be lowered to be accessed--I assume the vehicle is starting hard when cold--common problem with these vehicles--if taken to a dealer mechanic, they will probably tell you replacement of the entire sending unit is necessary--which is not true--
