overdrive is caused when u push the tubes to the point they start to break up, some guitarist like it but, u cant get that sound at low volumes unless u have an attenuator.

distortion is caused by frequency clipping. most solid state amps have it buit in. but u can use pedals for it too.

How was distortion on an guitar amplifier first made?

Distortion first appeared when guitar players would turn up their tube amps too loud and the launched the power section into overdrive, hence creating a distorted sound.

Should you place the distortion or overdrive box before or after the wah pedal when setting up a guitar rig?

most players do either, theres no 'right way' just like no right way to play the guitar itself...each give a slightly different sound. The function of a distortion pedal is similar to the preamp gain stages in a regular guitar amp. All of the classic wah sounds were produced in this manner: 1. guitar 2. wah 3. guitar amp 4. speakers If you put the distortion first, you will not get the classic wah sound. In addition, every guitar multi-FX processor made puts the wah before the overdrive/distortion in the FX chain. Many of these processors put the overdrive/distortion AFTER the preamp gain stage which is in the effects loop of a typical guitar amp. You would start at your guitar and go guitar-distortion-wah-amp. Because you want to wah a distorted signal, not distort a wah. If you distort the wah, you're not really getting the right effect. It makes a big difference.

What are overdrives on guitar?

Similar to a distortion effect in the way it creates a gritty sound. But completely diffrent. Overdrive creates an effect that brings out natural tones mixed with a gritty sound.

How do you get distortion on your amp?

your amplifier should have a switch for 'gain' or 'overdrive' switch... and usually knob for either and knobs for treble and bass.... if you switch the overdrive on and then muck around with the knobs until you find a sound you are happy with. also put use your back pick up cause it will sound weird otherwise

Does the Boss DS-1 pedal work good with a Peavy amp?

The Boss DS-1 Distortion Pedal is an all-around good piece of equipment. Although it is on the inexpensive side, it still produces a solid tone that can be dialed-in with your amp to get everything from a lightly crunchy overdrive to a higher-gain distortion. Kurt Cobain and many others have used the orange pedal as an additional overdrive box to supplement their amplifier distortion. It will work as well with a Peavey amp as it will with anything. What it really comes down to is your own taste. As with any pedal, it will combine its own tones with the amp's sound to produce the final distortion tone. Either way, it's a good pedal (especially for the price) and it's worth experimenting with.

What is the relationship between pincushion distortion and barrel distortion, and how do they differ from each other?

Pincushion distortion and barrel distortion are both types of optical distortions that occur in images. Pincushion distortion causes the image to appear pinched inwards towards the center, while barrel distortion causes the image to bulge outwards towards the edges. The main difference between the two is the direction in which the distortion occurs - pincushion towards the center, and barrel towards the edges.

What happens when clipping occurs in a inverting amplifier?

The output waveform will be limited to the difference between the supply and ground (or between the positive and negative supplies). This causes distortion of the output waveform.
