The first thing about learning to read Latin is that, as with any language, a certain amount of effort, diligence and application are unavoidable (as well as some frustration.....) Here are a few tips I have found helpful: 1. Get an early grounding in the basics with a 'Teach Yourself Latin' book - there are several on the market. 2. Try to grow your vocabulary eg by 10 words a week (i.e. committing to memory) 3. Some grammatical forms (ie in the earlier stages) should be learned by heart - it's alot easier in the long run!! 4. Try to start reading a familiar and easy text such as the Bible (gospel stories, Lord's prayer etc), Winnie the pooh, Harry Potter and so on - initially making use of the English text to help. Laura Gibbs has a lot of material such as proverbs, Bible stories, legends etc http://www.mythfolklore.net/ 5. Memorise some of the poems of Catullus 6. Don't feel the need to look up every word in a dictionary - accept that as you go on you'll learn more and more words but that gist reading means you'll sometimes not understand absolutely everything 7. Spend time reading out loud 8. Little and often and don't give up. To encourage yourself go back to what you were reading 6 months ago to see the progress you've made.
