The instrument is basically a MIDI trigger device. It is the body of a synth ax guitar stripped and modified with piezo triggers. It was dubbed the synthax drumitar.

When he formed his own band, the Flecktones, their style became a mixture of jazz, newgrass, funk, and blues. Since then Bela has pursued his interest in classical, Asian and African music and infused these elements into his repertoire.
