Can you hurl nuclear waste to the sun?

Yes, we could launch nuclear waste into the Sun. The problem with the concept is simple economics. It presently costs US$20 million to US$30 million to launch even a small payload of 1200 pounds (544 kg). NASA indicates an average cost of US$450 million to launch a Space Shuttle craft, with a payload capacity of 50,000 pounds (22,700 kg). So with spacecraft we are talking about payloads of thousands of pounds, but with nuclear waste we are talking about millions of tons! If you consider only the highest level radioactive waste (HLW), the amount of HLW produced worldwide each year is approximately 53,000,000 pounds (24,000,000 kg); that's nearly 1100 Space Shuttle payloads each year, 3 Space Shuttles launched nearly every single day! In addition to high level waste there is low level waste, intermediate level waste, transuranic waste, along with huge amounts of contaminated soil and water. There is not only the waste that we are now producing, but we have an accumulation of nuclear waste from the past 60 years. It is unlikely that we could ever come up with enough fuel to launch all of our nuclear waste into space with the technology we now have. Future developments in applied physics might make it possible to do this with at least part of our most problematic wastes.

What happens if you eat nuclear waste?

Depending on the isotopes in the waste and the amount eaten it may cause anything from instant death to radiation burns to cancer that takes decades to develop.

Good and bad effect of nuclear fission and fusion?

fission crest radio active wastes wich are harmeful to life. they create tumors and we are running out of space to store the waste. fission crest radio active wastes wich are harmeful to life. they create tumors and we are running out of space to store the waste.

How much plutonium is in 1 ton of nuclear waste?

The amount of plutonium in the nuclear waste depends on the type of waste and its origin. If by waste, it is meant the spent nuclear fuel discharged from reactor after irradiation, then the plutonium amount depends mainly on the nuclear fuel initial enrichment, the neutron irradiation flux, and the time of irradiation. In usually operated nuclear power reactors of light water reactors, the discharged spent fuel contains roughly 1 kg plutonium per ton of fuel.

What are the lyrics to Y-O-Y by Plug in Stereo?

I hear a bird as it whispers in my ear It says oh what a waste of time, Look how you live your life, Trying to show no fear. I see a man as he sits along on the street He holds a sign that begs for love His mind is so messed up That he can't even think. So in this big world you gotta' keep your head straight Take baby steps and you'll get there some day. So y-o-y would I just let my life be a waste, A bag of bones, a waste of space And how oh how did you think to wait til now if you want to fix this place I smell the scent of greed that makes us dwell We're always at each others necks, trying to be the best Looking out for ourselves I feel like we've lost touch with what's real With our heads stuck up in the clouds, only living for now Tell me what's the deal So in this big world you gotta' keep your head straight Take baby steps and you'll get there some day. So y-o-y would I just let my life be a waste, A bag of bones, a waste of space And how oh how did you think to wait til now if you want to fix this place So y-o-y would I just let my life be a waste, A bag of bones, a waste of space And how oh how did you think to wait til now if you want to fix this place So y-o-y would I just let my life be a waste, A bag of bones, a waste of space
