What is the meaning behind Elton John's song 'Daniel'?

Daniel is about a Vietman Vet who was blinded in the war, and is commended for being a Hero, so is sent home. His younger brother is the one supposedly singing about his heroic brother. He is called a hero and his brother wants him to stay home, and has missed him,but Daniel does not consider himself a hero at all. He simply wants to be left alone, so takes off to Spain. It was sort of dedicated to all the crippled and damaged men in the Vietnam War. Very sad song. But later Elton John had said it was about his brother. You wouldn't get this from the lyrics of the song because Elton demanded that the last verse be cut off to shorten the already long song. Hope i helped(:

Supposedly about a blind war veteran, there is no mention of war- ( or even violent weather- like Walking in the Rain- a frequent euphemism for battle shock) I think it has homosexual overtones. The travel theme seems moribund rather than go-go.

The second verse tells about Daniel describing Spain even if he has been there, and laments how he misses Daniel. The chorus tells that Daniel is the singer's brother and Daniel is older than him. There are two different interpretations- it is about a Blind brother- possibly a war veteran, of the songwriter. ( not true). the more likely one is that it is about a homosexual romance. It should be noted that venereal disease is one of the manifold causes of total blindness. The song does have man to man overtones, the ( scars that dont heal) are not necessarily battle inflicted but could be emotional scars. I don"t know how the war angle got in other than the fact air travel is part of the song.
