We Are The People - as sung by Rangers supporters is a derogatory remark towards Irish immigrants in Scotland, stemming back to the 1850's. Irish immigrants fleeing An Gorta Mór were often predicted as sub-human and animals by the British media. They were 'non-people'. In Rangers early days, its president John Ure Primrose established links between the club and the Freemasons. He saw the business potential in making the club attractive to people across Scotland who resented the Irish immigrants. This anti-Irish racism continues today with the singing of 'The Famine Song'.

i was so pleased to discover i am not alone in my quest for the meaning to WE ARE THE PEOPLE by EMPIRE OF THE SUN. After researching and listening repeatedly and for extended lengths of time my inclinations grow ever-so-gradually confirmed that the true deeper meaning of this track is the stuff dreams are made of: the ultimate and emotional reminiscing about youth, freedom, love, camaraderie and the power--the unlimited and ever-replenishing power that comes with such things; during that time....at that place. i hope that my cautious inclination proves to be true but if I'm wrong, so be it. either way my thirst for the writer's deliberate meaning is what I am seeking. the references to 1975, the number 11, and many other specifics tug at my curiosity as much as the chords pull at my soul. eagerly awaiting the truth on this one.....
