What is the meaning of Lifes Highway song by Steve Wariner?

The title of the song is no accident: the singer uses the highway as a metaphor for being alive. For example, he says "There's bread to win and tolls to pay on life's highway." In other words, some of us are "bread-winners"-- the people who work hard to make a living; but we also have to pay the tolls, as in, life can take a toll on us, or we have to endure certain obstacles and hardships, and sometimes pay a price, as we go along life's highway.

He also says "There is hope with every turn, A bridge to build, a bridge to burn, Here's hopin' you never go astray on life's highway"-- in other words, we live our lives hoping things will work out, wanting to believe things will get better. There are bridges we can build-- we can make things better and bring people closer-- or bridges we can burn, referring to ending relationships or shutting down opportunities for reconciliation. If life is a highway, then that highway has bridges, tolls, even bumps in the road, but it's all part of being alive, and the singer hopes we take our lives in a good and positive direction, rather than "going astray" and doing the wrong thing.
