In music, contrast can refer to differences in tempo, pitch, texture or volume.

Examples

For example, someone might say that there is a marked contrast between the soft piano introduction and the energy of the chorus (where there may be more instruments).

Or, there may be a contrast between the up-beat tempo at the end of a song compared to the laid back arrangement at the start.

Or in orchestral music, the horn section might provide a contrast to the strings if there was an interplay between them. Essentially it refers to differences of tone, tempo, texture, rhythm, volume, timbre and so on.

In Different Genres

Classical Music generally contains the most contrast. Rock Music generally tends to have the least contrast, as it usually conveys "full" and hard rythyms throughout entire songs (Though not always true; Foo Fighters, for example, has a song named "Pretender" that displays great contrast).

To have a distinct detailing of the composers point of view or feelings and emotion. Something with contrast often catches your attention with you barely noticing you are into the song or for a certain duration or melody. Articulating very well between the lows and highs and not just sitting in the middle. When more than one instruments are playing together, you have contrast.

Contrast is the difference between light and dark. The greater the difference, the higher the contrast. If the values are represented by a scale of 0-255, the ends of the scale represent the highest contrast. A value of 127 would represent neutral gray.

There are roughly six dynamics that are evident in music:

pp (pianissimo) - very soft, typically the quietest of dynamics

p (piano) - soft, the dynamic one level above pianissimo

mp (mezzo piano) - medium soft

mf (mezzo forte) - medium loud

f (forte) - loud or strong

ff (fortissimo) - very loud or very strong, typically the strongest dynamic in music.
