The smaller drum, the tabla, is made of a hollow tube of teak or rosewood, covered at one end by goat leather and tightened using a series of goat leather straps and wooden dowels. The larger drum, the banja, is made of beaten brass or copper with a goat leather head and straps (but no dowels). Instead of tubular, it is bowl-shaped.
