The tabla and banja, collectively known as the tabla (confusing, I know), are standard percussion instruments in any Indian ensemble. The smaller drum, the tabla, is made of a hollow tube of teak or rosewood, covered at one end by goat leather and tightened using a series of goat leather straps and wooden dowels. The larger drum, the banja, is made of beaten brass or copper with a goat leather head and straps (but no dowels). Instead of tubular, it is bowl-shaped. Both have the unique feature of a syahi, a small lump of molten rubber and iron filings placed on the drumskin and left to cool (cheaper models often have a synthetic substitute). This provides a clear and ringing tone when struck, loud enough to be heard over the rest of the orchestra.
