To praise and worship God
God gave us music so that we can worship and praise him.
First, the lyrics, the lyrics could be about his love, his forgiveness, his strength, or his greatness in all aspects of him. Second, the music itself shows the people that we are a praiser of God, so that they can watch us, and see that God is worthy of praise. Third, it says in Psalms quite a few times to praise with with all kinds of instruments, although there was only like harps and lyres back then but still, God wants us to praise and worship him with everything we got.

Music is an important part of worship and praise to God. Most of the verses about music talk about singing, but some mention instruments. Perhaps the best-known is Psalm 150: " Praise the LORD. Praise God in his sanctuary; praise him in his mighty heavens. 2 Praise him for his acts of power; praise him for his surpassing greatness. 3 Praise him with the sounding of the trumpet, praise him with the harp and lyre, 4 praise him with tambourine and dancing, praise him with the strings and flute, 5 praise him with the clash of cymbals, praise him with resounding cymbals. 6 Let everything that has breath praise the LORD. Praise the LORD. "
I think you question means: What is the history of Contemporary Worship. Worship has always been a part of the Scripture (Hebrew & Bible). PRAISE - The Bible uses words like "Praise God with instruments", "Shout Praises to his Name". Praise is a celebration of God and giving him honor. Praise takes on many forms; formal hymns or contemporary worship or dance and shouting. It is giving glory to God for who He is and what he has done. WORSHIP - Worship is more of a reverance and awe of God. We use the term "worship the King" even for earthly men which usually means to kneel down or prostrate yourself before a throne. Spiritual worship usually takes the form of bowing down before God. In Revelations, the Elders bow down and worship saying "Holy, Holy, Holy". Today, we worship God sometimes in music at a time when we are in awe and weeping before God who touches our heart.Modern Contemporary Worship did only arise within the last 50 years or so. I consider this to be congregational praise accompanied with guitar and modern electronic instruments. Maybe that is not what you refer to.
For Christians at least music has become another form of worship and even today there are contemporary songs written that involve praise and worship so that devout believers and regular believers can listen to that and worship the Lord.
