The Hohle Fels bird bone Flute is the oldest instrument in the world. A dozen pieces of griffon vulture bone were found dispersed in Hohle Fels cave in southern Germany in June of 2009. When assembled the instrument spans 8.6" in length with 5 holes. It is estimated to be 35,900 years old so it is really old.
Possibly percussion, but the oldest instruments ever discovered were woodwinds. Bird bone flutes as old as 40,000 years have been found in Europe and China.
