A.P. Carter, the head of the Legendary "Carter Family" who some credit as the founders of Country Music, travelled around the Country "a lot in the rural south" bringing songs back from Appalachian musicians, "Hill Folk" in the 1920's. He made it his mission to bring these songs to the masses, because in those days the songs would have otherwise been lost. The poor Mountain musicians didn't have telephones, and without cars they traveled no further than their own small communities.
During this time, "Hillbilly Music" as it was referred to then began to gain popularity. It wasn't until the 1940's that we began to call it Country Music as the term hillbilly had become degrading and stereotyped. As the music continued to gain some mainstream popularity in the late 40's and early 50's we spawned legendary artists such as Gene Autry, Roy Acuff, Ernest Tubb, Hank Williams Sr, and then by the mid 50's Superstars like George Jones, Johnny Cash, and even Elvis Presley.
In the 60's and 70's Country Music as an artform exploded. People became no longer ashamed to admit that they liked Country Music, and artists were headlining at places like Carnegie Hall, and Madison Square Garden.
In the 1990's artists like Garth Brooks were selling millions, but many feel that Country Music turned away from it's roots during that time, and the new sound that had taken over should have been called something else.
Superstar Country Legend George Jones, who has had songs on the charts for more than 50 years and has been titled "the Worlds Greatest Living Country Singer" , also feels that the modern Country Music is not Country Music at all, but a whole new artform that should be titled as such.
