I had this same issue. Take out the radio and call a Mitsubishi dealer. You will need to serial number, and they can look it up on some site they only have access to. Blame the oil change people for leaving the air filter sensor unplugged when starting the car, then having to unplug the battery to reset the check engine light.
contact your local Authorized Mitsubishi Dealer the radio. Once the Part Number and the Serial Number are in hand, your Dealer can access the security code for that radio. Customer Relations Call Center at 1-888-MITSU2010 (1-888-648-7820) they will provide you with security code and steps to reset the radio as long as you have the Part Number and Serial Number for your radio unit. Agents are available Monday-Friday 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. (PT). It's free :)
there are several codes. none of them are the same. you have to get the code from your local dealer...

http://www.DelcoLockCodes.com will get you your radio unlock code for $5.00. Contact a GM dealer, preferably the selling dealer. They may have the code stored in their computer system if they sold the car. Otherwise you are probably going to have to remove the radio and get the Serial # off the radio. With this serial # the GM dealer will provide the code.
i need to know how to set the radio when you battery goes dead and the radio says code its a 2001 mits monyero sports.
Me too want to know how!!! I changed battery on my 2001 montero and stunned to see need to enter code on radio in order to work. that is sucks!!!
You might check owners manual, it is a hand written four digit code. Or you have to pull the radio and get serial # and manufacturer
To set the radio code in a 1997 Montero Sport, you typically need to turn on the radio, which may display "CODE" or "LOCK." Enter the code using the preset buttons on the radio; for example, if your code is 1234, press the "1" button once, the "2" button twice, and so on. After entering the correct code, the radio should unlock and resume normal operation. If you don’t know the code, you may need to consult the owner's manual or contact a Mitsubishi dealer for assistance.
To retrieve the radio code for a 2001 Mitsubishi Montero Sport, you typically need the vehicle's VIN and the serial number of the radio unit. This code can often be found in the owner's manual, on a card that came with the vehicle, or by contacting a Mitsubishi dealership. If these options are not available, you may need to consult a professional automotive locksmith or a car audio specialist.
Contact the dealer from where the Montero was originally purchased (new from showroom). Give them the Chasis number and they will provide you with the stereo lock code from their records. In-case the code is same for all 1997 Montero sports models then use the number 9613. This is the audio code of my Montero sport 1997 . Maybe it works in yours too! Good luck.

mine is 4938
You might have the codes located in your owners manual. If you dont, then try calling Mitsubishi and ask them for codes or where you might find them. I know when I take the battery out of mine the radio requires a code and you only get three tries to put them in otherwise you have to take the battery out then put it in again. Hope this helps. Patrick
Disconnect the battery. Warning: If you disconnect the battery for an extended period of time, the radio will not work and you will need to enter a security code to get the radio to work again. The dealership will charge you $$ to supply you with the security code.
