ABBA never officially disbanded and had already recorded several tracks for a planned 9th studio album when they took a break in 1983 to work on other projects. (On their last public appearance, on British TV in December 1982, they insisted they were not calling it quits.) Agnetha Faltskog and Frida Lyngstad both revived their solo careers, recording new albums (Lyngstad in collaboration with Phil Collins), while Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson began their three-year partnership with Tim Rice to write the rock musical "Chess".
But it was also true that the fun had gone out of working together: both couples had divorced by late 1981 and there was a sense that they'd lost their connection with the music-buying public. When Agnetha recorded the vocal to their last track, "The Day Before You Came", she said she felt it was the end.
