Duels have been fought in the West for over a thousand years. As such, most types of personal weapons have been used at some stage. Early German fencing manuals show judicial duels taking place with special spiked shields. Specific styles of sword designed for dueling include the dueling sword or epee, the Italian dueling Sabre and the German schlager (a type of Sabre). The last duels fought in Europe used dueling swords closely resembling modern fencing epees (which were developed to train for such duels). Films of some of these later duels exist.
