OK, I hate this song, but it sticks like a bad taste in the mouth. both the writer and the performer ( Mac Davis and Elvis Presley) were or are- White. ( are they qualified to write of Ghetto life?)- The song is really closer to a country and western Ballad- a song spinning a story, than something like Suspicious Minds which is a far better song. In the Ghetto joins the ranks of the Suicide Club- the lengthy litany of songs that deal with this abhorrent problem. It is not directly stated in the song but strongly implied the (Angry Young Man) takes his own life. It might also be considered anti-Gun. Presley emphasizes the word ( Gunn!) in the song. as no mention is made of a gun battle- or encounter with police, it smells like a suicide.
