Guitar picks are put into categories for thickness, ranging from Extra Thin to Extra Thick. Extra thick is any pick above 1.5 mm. Dunlop "Primetone" picks are 5.0 mm, and as far as I know they are the thickest picks on the market right now, unless you order them custom made.
Well Timmy, it really all depends on how the pick feels when you play it. It also depends on whether you have an acoutsic or electric. Which one do you have Timmy, huh? Acoustic or Electric? Which one, Timmy?
But all jokes aside, it depends on the person and the guitar. For non electrics, I recommend tougher picks, and for electrics, you can use softer picks because the sound is magnified by the amp anyways. But really, it's up to you.
The thinnest guitar picks can be the 'extra thin' kind which are .44 mm or less.

You use a tuner! Making sure the pitch of the string is neither flat or sharp. Normal tuning for a guitar is E A D G B E (lowest, thickest string to highest, thinnest string in case you didn't know. Just plug the guitar in ,if you have an electric, with a cable or put the tuner near the guitar, acoustic. The tuner should have a little mic to pick up the sound if your tuning an acoustic.
