There are 128 fully recognised Universities that offer upto PHD level awards. In addition to that, there are nearly 60 private expensive institutes in main cities that offer world class degrees (such as University of London External degrees, Sunderland University & many other UK universities qualifications through affiliations).

Out of 128, 70 universities are state universities whereas rest of them are private universities but are fully recognised and the facilities they offer are equal to any state university (Higher Education Commission of Pakistan - HEC - gives that accreditation).

It is interesting to note that recently 2 Pakistani universities have made in SUNDAY TIMES QS Top 500 Universities of the world (University of Lahore and National University of Sciences).

Other well reputed private & public Universities include: Lahore University of Management Sciences LUMS (with annual research budget of $25 Million dollars), University of Karachi, Agha Khan University and GIK Institute, IBA Karachi, NED Karachi ..... In addition to that, there are regional campus (not affiliations but universities own campuses) of some world class Universities, such as Univeristy of Bradford.

PS: Pakistan has many other institutes (nearly 1000) that claim to offer many degrees but they are not fully recognised so they have not been counted in the above.
