(Fender stratocaster) A double cut-away guitar offers a lighter, thinner, guitar with easier playability since you can more easily get your hand around the higher frets. (Gibson Les Paul) A single-cutaway guitar offers a heavier, bulkier guitar with more sustain and less playability. Usually offers a different sound from double-cutaways. It's really all about style
"Lonesome Dave" Peverett typically played one of several versions of the venerable Gibson Les Paul Junior, usually either the single-cutaway version in a sunburst finish, or the double-cut version in the Heritage Cherry finish over the Honduran Mahogany. He also played a rather strange (non-Gibson) aluminum guitar from time to time.
