When you study history, you study events that occurred which you may not perceive that you had any part in creating, but by which you are affected. So then even though you "didn't start the fire," i.e. didn't have a causal influence on historical events, you must "try to fight it," in other words, learn from the events and incorporate its lessons into your own life. And those of your friends and family, the "we."
