He feels alone and despair to point of suicide till he finds lonely Christine who lost her father through an illness. He becomes her teacher, he teaches her to sing, falls in love with her kindness and he is torn what he is to her. He must wear a mask around her maybe she would not want to see the horrid of his face which no doctor at the time could repair. She could love him for his music and not want to know his physical ugliness.
