For many years in the early 1920's, Les Paul had been attempting to amplify the sound of acoustic Guitars with gradual successes for the purpose of performance for much larger spectator numbers. In 1930, George Beauchamp discovered that rather than amplifying sound, he created a method for the vibration of the strings to send an amplified signal through a metal plate. This resulted in the volume being 10 times louder than a microphone with perfect clarity and successfully eliminating speaker distortion. Little did he know that during the 40's and 50's, distortion was a much sought after effect, even more so as music evolved.
