There is nothing wrong with the current one. It contains some archaic words, like girt, but people should learn what they mean, not moan about it.

What is the significance of Australia's national anthem?

After a Public Opinon poll in 1974, the then Prime Minister, Gough Whitlam, announced that "Advance Australia Fair" would be Australia's new National Anthem, the tune suggested and favoured by his wife Margaret. This change was short-lived and we returned to "God Save the Queen". A further National Poll in 1977 chose "Advance Australia Fair" as the new National Anthem again, with 2.9 million votes. Finally, "Advance Australia Fair" was proclaimed as the new Australian National Anthem on the 19th of April, 1984.

Was Waltzing Matilda by Banjo Paterson going to be the Australian national anthem?

"Waltzing Matilda" had a chance of becoming Australia's national anthem in the 1970s/1980s. Back in 1973 then Prime Minister, Gough Whitlam wanted a new national anthem instead of "God Save the Queen" and a competition was held. None of the new entries was considered worthy enough, so the existing songs "Advance Australia Fair", "Waltzing Matilda" and "Song of Australia" were proposed. A 1974 national poll found that "Advance Australia Fair" was the most popular choice. In 1977 the Fraser government held a referendum and attached a national plebiscite to choose the National song. "Advance Australia Fair" won with 43%, "Waltzing Matilda" with 28% and "Song of Australia" with 10%, keeping "God Save the Queen" had 19%. Finally in 1984 the Hawke government adopted "Advance Australia Fair" as the national anthem. For "Waltzing Matilda" to become the Australian national anthem would require an extremely wide-spread ground swell of popular support, intense lobbying of federal members and probably another naitonal plebiscite to confirm its choice. Timing would be important, perhaps during next serious fling at becoming a Republic: some will argue for a new national anthem, not to mention a new flag. Fortunately enough people regard the choice of a song about an itinerant stealing a sheep and drowning rather than be taken into custody as somewhat less dignified as the nation's anthem than the present choice.

Which country sings their national anthem in two languages?

New Zealand has two national anthems: God Defend New Zealand and God Save the Queen. God Save the Queen is the national anthem of the United Kingdom and many of its former colonies use this anthem as its royal anthem, but have their separate national anthems. New Zealand is the only other country to recognize this as its national anthem in addition to its unique own. No country has two national flags. There are several flags within the majority of countries (ranging from political regions within the country such as a territory, state, province, etc.), but no country has two flags at a national level.

Because New Zealand is a nation.

Why is waltzing Matilda significant to Australia?

No. Waltzing Matilda is an Australian folksong, nothing more. A competition was held to find a new national anthem during the 1970s, instigated by then-Prime Minister Edward 'Gough' Whitlam. Three songs were considered: "Advance Australia Fair", "Waltzing Matilda" and "Song of Australia". As early as 1974, a national poll indicated that the preference of most Australian was for "Advance Australia Fair". In 1977 a new government under Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser held a referendum which included a national plebiscite to choose a new National Anthem. Once again, "Advance Australia Fair" was the most popular, with a vote of 43%, compared to just 28% for "Waltzing Matilda", while "Song of Australia" gained 10% of the vote and 19% were in favour of keeping "God Save the Queen". The final decision was made under the Hawke government in 1984, which made "Advance Australia Fair" the official national anthem.

Was 'Advance Australia Fair' Australia's first national anthem?

No. Australia's first national anthem was "God Save the Queen". Australia wasn't independent in 1901 when Federation occurred; it was a self-governing colony (refer to section 8 in the preamble to the Australian Constitution). Australian Troops actually returned from WWI in 1919 on British passports. Australia was also not independent in 1931, despite the Statute of Westminster; the commonwealth and the states were still subject to a higher power in varying degrees. Once again, Australian Troops returned from WWII in 1946 on British Passports. This is why God Save the Queen remained our national anthem for so long. Australia selected its new national anthem of Advance Australia Fair in 1984. As stated by the Chief Justice of the Australian high court in 1992: "The Australia Act 1986 (UK) marked the end of the legal sovereignty of the Imperial Parliament and recognised that ultimate sovereignty resided in the Australian people".
