I believe that a size 2 is softer and easier to play. The lower the number, the easier to play. Most beginners start on 2 and gradually get larger/harder. Hope this helped!

Why is Strength 3 synthetic reed for clarinet too hard to play on?

Everyone has their own preferred strength of reeds. If you are used to 2.5 strength reeds, 3 may give you sore lips, and 3.5 might even make you faint. It also depends on what brand of synthetic reed you use. For example, the Bari Synthetic Reeds are said to be very hard to play on. While Legere Synthetic Reeds tend to be softer and easier to play on(also quite expensive). If you are used to playing softer reeds, it will take 1-3 weeks of practising to get used to it.

What does the hardness of an alto saxophone reed do?

The number on the reed indicates the thickness of the reed. A thinner reed is easier to blow, but also is more delicate and does not last as long. Most beginners start with a lower number reed and, as their "chops" develop, move up to a higher number. Higher numbered reeds also improve quality of sound. It is most common to see a professional using a 2 1/2 - 3 saxophone reed.
