The main classes you would want to take is vocial lessons, join a chior, and play musicial instrements.
^ none of that is actually NECESSARY. It, however is all useful. It also depends on the genre you'd like to play. Genre's with clean vocals, softer melodies, acoustic guitar, piano, and the like are those of which that the things listed above would be important. For genres such as rock, punk, etc. simply practice and dedication would be enough.
You'd also need to form a band, preferably with people you can trust, and be able to play your own instruments in order to write songs, but again, not necessary.
Solo projects, you'd (obviously) need to be able to play an instrument, and be able to sing quite well. That will improve as the years progress though.
The only thing you truly need, is determination, and passion. All that other stuff are just crutches. ^^
Ps. Don't sell out, and do what you love. It goes from a career you love to a job you complain about, like working 9 to 5 at a staples if you don't like what you do.
