Some forms were retained such as the sonata, rondo, scherzo. For the most part classical forms were expanded in the Romantic era and new genres appeared, especially relating to specific instruments. Solo piano music became very popular through the work of composers like Liszt, Chopin, Field, Tomasek, Hummel etc.
In the romantic period, starting at the end of the classical period with the late Beethoven (see E. T. A. Hoffmann), the sonata form was used to be seen as formal and insufficient to express the wide range of emotions. Schubert, who admired Beethoven and his sonatas, composed many, but with the time the symphonic poems and other more free genres were preferred. Still most symphonies used the sonata form, which has been evolved by composers like Mahler or later Berg to fulfil the new pretensions.

The Classical period took the polyphony, some structures and the new tonal system from the Renaissance/Baroque period and made it a clearer and mostly homophonic music which is still what is prevalent currently... Mozart shifted music from the Baroque counterpoint to Classical galant form. For orchestra, he was one of the composers who developed the symphony and solo concerto. The other music genres emerged in his time are piano ensembles and solo piano sonatas.

It means new "classical" music, that is to say concert music, symphonies, operas, etc., that is written by living composers.
If you're referring to Classical music (the period in European classical music from about 1750-1830) then yes. If it's classical music as in the generalised art music then no. If your referring to Classical Civilisation then yes. The first and third are proper nouns as they refer to specific historical movement and eras respectively; the second is just a generalised term. Also, Classicism would usuallly be capitalised it was a specific artistic movement in the Eighteenth Century.

It wasn't.Beethoven initially developed as a composer during the Classical period. He admired the music of Mozart, which was marked by pretty melodies and simple harmonies, but not a great range of dynamics or complex structure.Gradually, Beethoven's music took on more expressive tones, passionate dynamics and grander orchestration. This was the beginning of the Romantic Era of music, and Beethoven not only provided the transition into this new period, but he also developed it and paved the way for later Romantic composers to build on this new, expressive style.
