Though Burt Bacharach has written music for many performers, including The Carpenters, Aretha Franklin, Gene Pitney and Luther Vandross, Dionne Warwick is the singer whose career was built by Bacharach.
Warwick was singing with a group called The Gospelaires. They were singing backup for The Drifters when Bacharach, who happened to be in the recording studio, asked Warwick if she would sing some songs that he and his then-partner, Hal David, had written. Her versions of the song were so much better than those of the more famous recording artists, that Bacharach and David began to write with Warwick's voice in mind. She made her first hit single in 1962, "Don't Make Me Over," written and produced by Bacharach and David. It made it to the top 5 on R&B charts and the top 20 on pop charts. She sent on to make "Walk on By," "I Say a Little Prayer," "Alfie," and dozens of other hit songs.
Dionne Warwick's sister, Dee Dee, is also a pop singer. Her cousin is Whitney Houston.
