I have found two answers to this question:
The Bee Gees started their music career in Australia, but didn't achieve international fame until they moved to England in January of 1967. Their song "I've Gotta Get a Message to You" reached #8 in the U.S. charts in 1968.
The Little River Band was the first band to make the jump directly from Australia to the United States and have a top 10 hit. Their first was Reminiscing which reached #3 in 1978.
