The arches and spires of the medieval architecture were intended to force one's eyes to look toward the heavens. The spires in particular represent a finger pointing upward to God to indicate that he is in Heaven. The spires provided a constant reminder of that belief. Arches were an innovation of architecture to provide strength to the structure and provide additional light to inside of the building.

Gothic architecture is considered the architecture of light. The pointed arches and spires provide a distribution of weight that allows for wider windows and more open spaces, which was necessary for the stained glass windows to fill the Church or Cathedral with colored light during particular periods of the day. This has a greatly symbolic nature, the light representing God's Grace, which makes an otherwise dull piece of glass (the Christian) a beautiful work of art that fills the entire Church, irradiating this Grace (a saint).

The arches were designed to support the building and the spires were added to make the buildings look like they were reaching toward God. The Romans learned in their buildings that if they used the arch they could make taller, heavier buildings with domes. So, Middle Ages architects did the same things to make the grand churches and buildings they designed.

What architectural style is Tower of London?

As the Tower of London was built by William the Conqueror, also known as Duke William of Normandy, it was built by Norman masons and English labour, and is an example of Norman architecture. The White Tower retains many original architecture features, but the rest of the Tower has undergone so many modifications that it is difficult to pinpoint any one architectural style. The Tower of London is one of the most fascinating examples of medieval castles.
