His father was a Flight Lieutenant in the Royal Air Force, and both his parents were musically inclined, his father having played Trumpet in the Bob Millar Band, a semi-professional dance band of the late '40s.
Elton's father was strict with his son, and his parents never got on very well, often having terrible rows that he sometimes witnessed. They divorced when he was 14- his mother went on to marry a local painter called Fred Farebrother who was a kind and supportive stepfather to Elton.
