I have heard an audio clip from a Cash concert in which he refers to making a trip to Long Bien AFB near Saigon in January, 1969.
I believe it was called Long Bind, South Vietnam and it was basically a huge many faceted supply base with heliports. The actual air base was a few miles away in Bien Hoa. I am pretty sure it was 1968 because I was a correspondent for the United Army First Logistical Command in Long Binh and another person from my support command covered his visit with me. He was sick as hell from something but he made hospital visits and had with him his wife June, members of the Carter family, Carl Perkins and his backup band called the Tennessee Three. They were all amazing. His wife June at the beginning of the concert had said he had just been working with Bob Dylan on an album. I attended a concert at an NCO club in Long Binh. First Carl Perkins did a set, then June and then Johnny Cash joined them. At the end he said that he would honor any requests for songs any soldier had and he did. He played for what seemed forever. And then when he was finished, despite how haggard he looked, they put up what I think were card tables and everyone was able to get an autographed picture. They were side by side; first Carl Perkins, then June and then Johnny, and as he signed the last autograph he got up and stood and shook each soldiers' hand! It was a hell of a concert from a great group of people. God Bless those folks for what they did. They may not have believed in that war, but then a lot of us didn't either.
